When to Go

Lake Eyasi transforms dramatically with the seasons and depending on what time of the year you visit, you might experience a bird-filled wonderland or a dry, surreal landscape. June to October is generally considered the best time to visit Northern Tanzania for wildlife sightings, with clear, sunny skies and little chance of rain. But Lake Eyasi almost completely dries out during this period, although it’s still incredibly photogenic.

The short rains fall in November and December, followed by the long rains from March to May when Lake Eyasi fills with shallow water. Birds flock here to breed, making these months ideal for birdwatchers. It’s worth keeping in mind that Lake Eyasi is a soda lake, so wildlife doesn’t converge here to drink, although hippos are known to sometimes wallow in the waters.
