Lodges Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater which is part of the bigger Ngorongoro Conservation Area, one of the loveliest protected areas in Tanzania, is one of the world’s most renowned natural wonders filled with incredible amount of wildlife. Besides the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater is the best place to see the Big Five of Africa -- lion, leopard, rhinoceros, cape buffalo, and elephant, all living with the volcanic caldera. Any visitation to the northern circuit of Tanzania will be incomplete with a visit to this magnificent crater. The crater is a result of eruption of a large volcano which after explosion, collapsed on itself leaving behind this huge crater as we know it today. It is the world’s largest inactive, unfilled volcanic caldera. It is 610 meters deep and covers an area of 260 sq km. From the crater rim, you’ll get a mesmerizing view of the surrounding area consisting of mountains, plains, highlands, swamps, and lakes. The game viewing of this place is nothing less than excellent and is on par with that of Serengeti. Besides the Big Five of Africa, expect to see herds of wildebeests, buffalos, and zebras. Other animals like bat-eared foxes, Thompson’s Gazelles, and jackals are also spotted, albeit rarely. Somewhere around 400 bird species inhabit the region, both native and migratory. Inside of the conservation area, there are a number of luxury lodges that give an excellent view of the crater and the surrounding region. All of these things make Ngorongoro Crater one of the most famous safari destinations in the country.
