Selous Game Reserve

Nyerere National Park Tanzania – Big Game & River Safaris

Nyerere National Park – Tanzania’s Untamed Safari Wilderness

Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the famous Selous Game Reserve, is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, spanning over 54,000 square kilometres—nearly four times the size of the Serengeti. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is celebrated for its incredible wildlife diversity and vast, unspoiled landscapes.

The park is home to one of Africa’s largest lion populations (around 4,000), alongside zebras, giraffes, elephants, hippos, rhinos, and buffalos that roam the Acacia savannahs and Miombo woodlands. Over 440 bird species thrive here, including African skimmers, giant kingfishers, and Malagasy squacco herons that gather in the wetlands, while vervet monkeys and baboons can be seen in the park’s forested areas.

At the heart of Nyerere National Park is the mighty Rufiji River, which supports an abundance of wildlife. Game viewing along its riverbanks offers unforgettable opportunities to spot large herds and rare species as they come to drink, especially during boat safaris—a signature Nyerere experience.

While night game drives are not allowed, the park offers walking safaris led by expert guides, giving you the chance to encounter wildlife on foot and explore the smaller details of the ecosystem, from animal tracks to fascinating plant life.

If you’re planning a luxury Tanzania safari, Nyerere National Park offers an exclusive, crowd-free experience rich in wildlife, scenery, and adventure. Browse our handpicked Nyerere safari itineraries to start planning your journey.
