The largest national park in Tanzania and entire East Africa with an area covering 20,226 sq km, Ruaha is home to a diverse range of wildlife and awe-inspiring landscapes which are seemingly undisturbed as it is visited by very few number of tourists. Ruaha along with Selous Game Reserve make the best southern circuit safari tour destinations filled with abundant wildlife. Ruaha is mostly renowned for its wild dog population who are regularly spotted in packs around the bushes. These are very rare is other parts of the country. You can also spot other wild animals such as elephants, giraffes, hippos, buffalos, zebras, lion, leopards, and cheetahs, the predators being present less in number with the exception of lion. It accommodates 10% of world’s total lions who found in prides of as many as 20 members. Ruaha also is an ideal place for bird photography with as many as 550 different species recorded till date. Due to the vastness of this area, the wildlife may at times seem quite hard to spot. The best time to visit is during the months of June through October which are the dry season and around the Ruaha River. Ruaha is named after the Great Ruaha River which runs through it and serves as a major source of water of the birds and animals of this park.
