10 reasons why we love Mwiba Lodge Serengeti

Table of content

1. It boasts a breathtaking location

Mwiba Lodge nestles in a stunning setting within the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, a conservation concession in the Southern Serengeti that not only preserves habitat for native wildlife but ensures that the needs of local communities are also met. It enjoys an exclusive location far from the crowds of the Central Serengeti, with massive boulders framing the lodge and breathtaking views across the freshwater springs and acacia-dotted savannah that surrounds it. Mwiba Lodge lies along the banks of the Arugusinyai River and has been constructed using locally sourced materials so that it blends seamlessly with the natural environment.

2. The beautifully designed suites

At Mwiba Lodge, there are just 10 tented suites, which are connected via a series of wooden walkways that meander through the landscape. They are beautifully decorated with textured fabrics and African artefacts while boasting large bathtubs and modern conveniences, such as air-conditioning, power sockets and USB points. When you’re not out exploring on your Tanzania safari, you can enjoy relaxing in the spacious seating area or on the shady deck and there’s even an outdoor shower where you can refresh. Several of the suites boast views overlooking the watering holes while others offer panoramas of the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve’s rocky valley. Each of the suites can be configured with either king or twin beds and feature a sofa that can be transformed into an additional bed for children.

3. The high-end amenities

While Mwiba Lodge boasts plenty of high-end amenities, its infinity pool is an undisputed highlight. It’s an idyllic place to refresh after your morning game drive, with stylish recliners and bean bags surrounding the pool where you can kick back with a good book. Hidden behind a nearby boulder is a heated plunge pool and there’s a peaceful spa where you can indulge in a massage treatment. If you don’t want to miss a workout, you can take advantage of Mwiba Lodge’s well-equipped fitness studio or enjoy cosy evenings beside the fireplace in the elegant library.

4. You’ll be treated to gourmet dining

When you stay at Mwiba Lodge, the dining is second-to-none, with meals drawing on fresh, local produce that’s been given a contemporary twist. Settle in at one of the wooden and bronze tables in the laid-back dining room, which centres around an impressive stone fireplace that provides a focal point on chilly nights. There’s a well-stocked bar where you can grab aperitifs and sundowners, as well as an impressive wine cellar that’s been carved into a natural rock to ensure the bottles remain cool.

5. You can dine out in the bush

For an immersive dining experience, you can opt to have your breakfast, lunch or dinner served out in the bush while spotting wildlife and enjoying the natural beauty of the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve. Just because you’re in the “great outdoors” doesn’t mean the chefs will compromise on quality and you’ll still enjoy the high-end cuisine that Mwiba Lodge has become renowned for.

6. It offers thrilling game drives

A stay at Mwiba Lodge is all about wildlife encounters and one of the best ways to do this is on a private game drive. Seated in custom-designed, open 4x4 safari vehicles, you’ll have a front-row seat as you travel through the reserve’s magnificent landscapes and encounter its big-game wildlife. Private game drives at Mwiba Lodge are led by highly experienced guides who will share their decades of knowledge with you. They are available both day and night so you can witness some of the Serengeti’s nocturnal species as well. Worried about getting cold? Their staff will also provide you with blankets and hot water bottles so you can really enjoy the experience.

7. You can embark on guided bush walks

Another highlight of staying at Mwiba Lodge is its guided bush walks, which offer a completely different perspective on the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve. Taking place in the cool of the morning or the late afternoon, your experienced guide will lead you down into the valley where you’ll get up close to elephants, buffalos and other grazing species. Learn about the plant life that’s indigenous to the region and come face-to-face with some of the smaller (and lesser-known) wildlife that usually get overlooked on game drives. There are several tree platforms and rock blinds that have been established throughout the reserve so that you can view wildlife, without them being scared away by you.

8. It’s on the route of the Great Wildebeest Migration

Thanks to its setting in the Southern Serengeti, Mwiba Lodge is positioned along the route of the Great Wildebeest Migration. It usually passes through the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve between December and April, with the period from January through to May seeing huge herds of wildebeest calving on the region’s fertile plains. There are few better places to witness the Serengeti migration, with curious newborns taking their first steps while a host of predators, including lions, leopards and cheetahs lurk nearby.

9. It’s close to Lake Eyasi

In just two hours from Mwiba Lodge, you can be overlooking the shallow salt waters of Lake Eyasi, which lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau. During the rainy season, it attracts hippos and migratory flamingos, as well as supporting populations of catfish and lungfish. In the dry season, the lake can dry up entirely and it’s not uncommon to see the Datoga and Hadza people crossing on foot. With a picnic lunch spread out before you, you can soak up the incredible scenery and experience something few people get to on their Tanzania safari holiday.

10. It offers a diverse array of cultural encounters

Aside from discovering the region’s natural beauty and wildlife wonders, the area around Mwiba Lodge is also culturally rich and the ancestral home of several different tribes. Cultural encounters can be organised at the lodge to visit one of the local Maasai and Mang’ati communities or you can learn to shoot a bow and arrow with the Hadza tribe, who are renowned for their knowledge of medicinal plants.
