Exploring Tanzania: Why Visit Zanzibar and Things to Do

Table of content

Tanzania has been known as a premiere safari destination: rugged landscapes, mouth-dropping wildlife and strong National Geographic feels. But in spite of its resounding name when it comes to wildlife, its reputation on having a piece of tropical paradise called Zanzibar still makes noise. This only proves that there are clear-cut reasons as to why people visit Zanzibar.

All about Zanzibar

Located on the Swahili coast just 25 to 50 kilometers east of mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar is an Indian Ocean archipelago made up of two large islands and several other small ones. The largest of all the islands is Unguja, which is often mistakenly called “Zanzibar” and the second largest is Pemba, both of which offer extraordinary stretches of pristine beaches.

Boasting an extravagant string of white sand beaches, luxury resorts and an envy-worthy year-round sunshine, Zanzibar offers more than just a chunk of tropical paradise. It is, in fact, also home of the Zanzibar Servaline Genet, the Zanzibar Leopard and the almost extinct Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey. With a very rich history, Zanzibar is also known for historical tours including a visit to Maruhubi Palace Ruins, Old Anglican Church, The Palace Museum, Mangapwani Slave Chamber, Arab Fort and of course the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town, which features an ancient trading center, mosques and some intriguing winding lanes.

Why visit Zanzibar

Given the scenery alone that the island provides, it wouldn’t be too hard to convince anyone that Zanzibar is one of the most unreal tropical destinations in Africa and even the world. Still, here are 8 reasons why it is must to visit Zanzibar:

#1 - Rich history and vibrant cultural heritage

The island is steeped in history and culture that is both intriguing and fascinating, That is why visiting Stone Town is a must, if you visit Zanzibar. Although the place has been inhabited for over 20,000 years, the real history starts when the islands became a base for voyaging traders from different parts of the world. Hence, the cultural mix in Zanzibar is truly unique – Arab, Indian, Persian, African and European influences. And of course, the influence of this fusion is most evident in Stone Town.

#2 - Dream-like beaches

An obvious point, Zanzibar’s beaches are some of the most exquisite ones in the world. The islands are blessed with fine white sands, crystal clear turquoise waters, peaceful lagoons and a world-class coral wilderness that makes it a top diving destination.

The east coast of Zanzibar is easily known as the “tidal coast” because all beaches in this area are tidal. Although they have varying tidal degrees, tides in the east can be particularly pronounced reaching up to 4 meters of height difference between high and low tide during equinox. This area also boasts of palm tree-fringed beaches and a grand coral reef protecting its beautiful lagoon. Travelers who are particularly active and interested in watersports, snorkelling and boating would really love this piece of paradise!

The northwest coast is the calm portion of Zanzibar. The beaches in here are lovely, non-tidal and very welcoming for swimmers any day. Since this is a very popular tourist spot, the northwest beaches are the busiest in Zanzibar.

Down under in the southwest coast of the island is a string of beaches known to provide ample opportunities to see whales  (especially in August and September) and even swim with dolphins.

So imagine having lots of sunshine with an equal amount of day and night… It’s always perfect for beach picnics and water sports, and enough reason to sip piña coladas everyday, yes?

#6 - Great food scene

Having a unique mix of cultures means having a unique variety of cuisines, too! With some borrowed flavors from its early settlers such as Portuguese, Indian and Middle Easterners, plus a wide-range of fresh homegrown spices that makes every dish even more mouth-watering that it already is, Zanzibar’s food scene truly offers something good for every taste bud.

Of course, fresh seafood is always a popular choice on the menu. For most locals, Octopus is a main favorite. After all, it’s widely available in both street food stalls and hotels throughout the island. If you’re feeling up to it, you can even catch your own meal!

Aside from the fresh seafood and delish local cuisines, you can also find many charming little cafes, street food and market food all over Zanzibar. One famous dish which is definitely a must-try is their famous spicy rice, Pilau.

#7 - Red colobus monkeys

In Zanzibar, you can find the Zanzibar colobus monkeys which are a species of red colobus monkeys endemic to the island of Unguja. It is one of the world’s most endangered primates. Truly, Zanzibar is a perfect place to unwind, relax and maybe even unplug from the modern world for a while.
