Why we love Singita Sasakwa Lodge for a Serengeti safari

Table of content

Offering sweeping views across the Grumeti Reserve, Singita Sasakwa Lodge is one of the most luxurious properties in the Serengeti region. It perches on a rocky promontory overlooking the sprawling grasslands below, with sensational views from all of its nine private cottages and hillside suite.

Singita Sasawka Lodge is styled on an Edwardian manor house, with opulent European design elements fused with East African touches and a good dose of old-world sophistication. Think private infinity pools and exclusive butler service - just some of the perks when you stay at this retreat on a luxury safari in Tanzania.

Not only does this Serengeti lodge ooze luxury but it’s positioned on the doorstep of exceptional wildlife viewing, including the Great Wildebeest Migration’s route. It’s an ideal base for seeing this unforgettable wildlife phenomenon as millions of wildebeest and zebras migrate north into the Maasai Mara in search of new grazing pastures. Spend your days on exhilarating game drives and guided walking safaris or visit one of the local communities to learn about Tanzanian culture.

You can return each day to be pampered at the on-site spa and you’ll never miss a workout with the lodge’s state-of-the-art fitness centre. Share your adventures with your family and friends back home thanks to the complimentary Wi-Fi that is provided throughout the property. If you’re travelling with kids, you can take advantage of Singita’s babysitting services, plus a range of tailor-made children’s activities so your little ones are never bored.

What we love about Singita Sasakwa Lodge’s accommodation

Singita Sasakwa

With just nine private cottages and a hillside suite, you’re guaranteed privacy and seclusion when you stay at Singita Sasakwa Lodge. There are six one-bedroom cottages, plus a couple of two-bedroom cottages, a three-bedroom cottage and a four-bedroom cottage, all with private plunge pools overlooking the Serengeti plains. The separate living areas are decorated with stately furnishings and cosy fireplaces while the ensuite bathrooms come with indulgent, deep-soak tubs and outdoor showers.

In addition to the cottages at Singita Sasakwa Lodge, there’s also a dual-level Hillside Suite, which offers the ultimate in exclusivity. This gorgeous villa accommodates just one couple, with private butler service and your very own game vehicle and field guide. The stylish interior is adorned with African artworks while the frameless glass doors make the most of the superb views. You can refresh in your private rim-flow swimming pool or experience an in-room spa treatment or couple’s massage on one of the two extensive wooden decks.

What we love about the Grumeti Private Game Reserve

Singita grumeti reserve

Central to the Singita Sasakwa Lodge’s appeal is its location in the wildlife-filled Grumeti Reserve, which is one of the best destinations for a private safari in Tanzania. This 350,000-acre private concession is on the direct route of the Great Wildebeest Migration while boasting exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year.

The Grumeti Reserve sees far fewer tourists compared to the busy Seronera area of the Serengeti, which means you’re guaranteed a more exclusive experience. It’s also not subject to the rules and regulations of Serengeti National Park, meaning that guides can drive off-road in pursuit of animal sightings while walking safaris (an incredibly special experience) are also permitted.

Daily game drives are a highlight of any visit, led by highly experienced guides that know the reserve like the back of their hand. Modern Land Cruisers that can accommodate up to six guests mean you’ll travel in style as you spot some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife. Singita prides itself on offering intimate game drive experiences, as well as night safaris to spot some of the reserve’s little-seen nocturnal species.

For a different perspective on the Grumeti Reserve’s grasslands, you can join a guided walking safari to get up close to some of the region’s tamer species. Led by an expert guide and tracker, you’ll learn about East Africa’s indigenous plant life and see some of the species that you would otherwise miss when travelling by vehicle.

But perhaps the most memorable wildlife-viewing experience takes place from the air during sunrise hot air balloon tours. Waking before dawn, you’ll float through the sky as the day’s first rays ignite the Serengeti grasslands while the herds slowly traverse the landscape below. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure is the best way of appreciating the vastness of the Grumeti Reserve and is a truly humbling experience.

Visiting Tanzania is not just about the wildlife, however, with community visits a special way of connecting with the people that call this beautiful landscape “home”. On guided community tours with Singita, you’ll visit their Environmental Education Centre that was established to meet learning needs and educate youngsters about the importance of the Serengeti ecosystem so that it is protected for generations to come.

Another unique experience when staying at Singita is the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes with an anti-poaching canine unit to learn about its role in protecting the region’s wildlife. You’ll meet the handlers and see their skilled dogs in action as they practice detecting wildlife contraband and tracking poachers through the bush.

Back at the lodge, you can enjoy a game of tennis on Singita Sasakwa Lodge’s tennis court before refreshing in the breathtaking infinity pool that fronts the property. Pick up authentic carvings, locally-made jewellery and African-style homewares in the lodge boutique, which also exhibits a fine collection of artworks and prints inspired by the region.

Best time to visit Singita Sasakwa Lodge

If you want to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration, June and July are generally considered the best months for visiting as it’s during these months that the herds gather along the Grumeti River banks before crossing the crocodile-infested waters. This coincides with the dry season when you can expect long, sunny days that are ideal for being out and about on game drives and walking safaris.

Light rains fall across the Serengeti region from November through to March, with these short downpours followed by clear, sunny skies to ensure you can still experience everything the region has to offer. Heavier downpours occur between March and May, which is when birdwatchers flock to the Grumeti Reserve to see migratory species on their annual visit from as far away as Europe and Asia.
