Table of content

For a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, Tanzania is a spectacular destination. Whether it is your honeymoon or a family adventure, this country is filled with unbelievable wildlife and incredibly beautiful scenery.

If you want to really get away from the hustle and bustle of the Western world and immerse yourself in nature, take a Tanzania vacation.

1. Animals

Tanzania offers several awe-inspiring national parks to explore, including the famed Serengeti. Obviously these are the country's biggest draw, as they provide the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most amazing wild creatures you will ever be lucky enough to encounter.

Maybe you will see a pride of lions, with cubs playing or nursing with their mother. You may see cheetahs, land's fastest mammals, sprinting across the plains. You may even witness a kill, which is as dramatic and amazing as it sounds.

Elephants are a frequent sight in Tanzania. Imagine the wonder of watching a family of these impressive creatures play in a waterhole, protecting their children, and greeting each other with their expressive trunks.

Giraffes are also common as you drive through the parks or even some of the rural areas of Tanzania. You can learn all about their distinctive markings, their feeding habits, and how fast they can gallop across the Tanzanian savannas.

In Tanzania, you can see "the Big Five," which is the term used for lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo. You can also see zebra, wildebeests, dik-diks, gazelles, elands, and kudus. You will probably also spot hyenas and wild dogs.

In Mahale Mountains National Park you will witness chimpanzees in the treetops.

If you are a bird watcher, know that Tanzania is home to over a thousand avian species, including colorful varieties such as flamingos, green regions, kingfishers, and bee-eaters.

2. Beautiful Accommodations

You don't need to rough it while on safari in Tanzania. There are many beautiful accommodations in this country.

Many prefer to stay in the luxury safari lodges, where you can watch the wildlife from the safety of beautifully appointed rooms. With open-air bedrooms, fine dining, and the best seat in the house for many of the area's most spectacular star-filled nights, you will enjoy an incomparable travel experience.

You will also have the convenience of electricity and running water to charge your cameras and get clean after a long day in the bush.

3. Mount Kilimanjaro

Surely one of the world's most breathtaking natural wonders, Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano. It also is the home to glaciers!

At 20,000 feet above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain in the world. Popular with hikers, it can also be admired from afar from Kilimanjaro National Park.

Tanzania is a great place to get closer to this geologic wonder.

4. The Great Migration

One bucket list item you can check off on your visit to Tanzania is a chance to witness the Great Migration, when millions of zebras, wildebeest, and antelope journey across the country.

You can see them brave crocodile-infested rivers and battle lions, leopards other predators in a primal battle for survival.

As the animals follow the annual rains, you can usually see their dramatic river crossings between July and October.

5. Zanzibar and Other Adventures

Tanzania has more to offer than safaris. Many visitors combine a safari with a trip to the beach, especially the paradise of Zanzibar.

Take a plane or ferry for the 23-mile hop to this magical island and expect a far different experience from your inland adventure. Zanzibar is almost entirely Muslim, so do not expect to go bar hopping.

You can enjoy some of the world's most pristine beaches, and snorkeling in crystal clear waters. You can explore the UNESCO site of Stone Town. Try some of the incredible dishes prepared with spices that have attracted traders from around the world for centuries.

You may not ever have a chance to visit Africa again so use your trip to Tanzania as a springboard to other countries. You will be next door to Kenya, which can offer more safari adventures and a chance to visit the Maasai tribe.

You can also take a short plane trip to Rwanda, and take a mountain trek to see the famous gorillas.

6. Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro is known as Africa's Eden. It is a 100-square-mile basin populated by the Big Five and thousand of other rare creatures. It is known as the eighth wonder of the world.

Formed millions of years ago when a volcano collapsed on itself, the crater's walls are 1600 feet high.

Over seventy lions live here, in addition to a population of rare black rhinoceros. You will also see plenty of warthogs.

Animas here do not migrate: they stay in the crater which has plenty of water sources. The location's unusual topography makes it an ideal place for visitors to see lots of wildlife in one place.

7. The Culture

Tanzania is home to about 120 tribal groups, and 95% of Tanzanians are of Bantu origin.

Tanzanians are very friendly and polite. They place significance on greetings and will take the time to ask about you and your family. Children are trained to greet their elders with a respectful declaration, and they may call you sister or brother.

Make sure you ask before you take their photos. Also, only extend your right hand in greeting as the left hand is considered unclean. Don't use your left hand to eat, either!

Tanzania and Zanzibar are more conservative than most Western nations, so try not to dress in low cut blouses or short shorts. They also do not appreciate public displays of affection between couples.

Don't forget: the expression "Hakuna Matata" from "The Lion King" originated here. So relax, be ready to move at a slower pace, and have "no worries."
